In Development: PSP°Map to Help Find PSP Users

Now here's a project with some legs!  Can't wait to see the outcome, this would absolutely ROCK!

[ via PSP Nation ]

In Development: PSP°Map to Help Find PSP Users:

This project is being kept very hush-hush, but we're going to report on it anyway, because it's right in line with out mission. Mario Eckl, a computer science student from Germany is developing an app (still in pre-beta) that will allow PSP gamers to find each other using some elements of Google Maps.

Apparently, he's developing this sample application for a thesis. Looks like the app will contain information on a user's current location, the game titles they own, plus a message forum. This type of connectivity is what I've been wanting to see in the firmware for months now. Mario, if you're out there, please keep us posted. Check a larger screen of the app after the jump!

Neo 4-in-1 Pad for PSP

Now this looks pretty interesting, but I have one question...why WHITE?  HELLO?  How about making it BLACK like the PSP?  Sometimes you just have to wonder what people are smoking...

[ via Engadget ]

Neo 4-in-1 Pad for PSP:

neo 4-in-1 pad

Besides the Datel 4GB PSP drive, there have been  few options to add non-MemoryStick memory to your Sony portable besides those awkward flash adapters that dangle from  the device with flat PCB cables. Well soon a new product will hit the market (from Neo, the same company that brought  us the MS converter tethered adapter) called the 4-in-1  Pad, an ergonomic PSP handgrip that doubles as an SD/MMC/CF/MicroDrive reader and triples as a battery pack that  accepts regular or rechargeable AAs and more than doubles the console’s playtime. Even better, the Pad features two USB  ports, which can either be used for charging the batteries or connecting to a PC to act as a standalone card  reader—plus, the bundled MemoryStick Duo won’t go to waste, as the 4-in-1’s adapter allows for MS passthrough. Neo is  still putting the final touches on this model, and it should be available in a few weeks for about $100—read on to  scope out the Pad’s profile.

FTB Multi-player Maps

Yeah boy...these are gonna definitely come in handy!  About time we started seeing some content specifically for SOCOM 3 FTB.  There are plenty of us out there that have a PSP but don't have a PS2 to play the full version SOCOM 3.  It's a damn shame this isn't available on XBOX.  One could only wish...

Killzone For PSP Coming

Killzone For PSP Coming:

http://pspmagazines.com/pspm/mags/KillZone.jpg

PSPWorld.com
Sony Computer Entertainment today announced that it has acquired Guerrilla Games to further expand its development capability as part of Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS). In the announcement, the two companies confirmed that a Killzone game for the PSP is being developed.

"Guerrilla B.V., based in Amsterdam, Netherlands is the award winning developer of the Killzone game for PS2, which has shipped close to 2 Million units worldwide. The studio is currently working on a new Killzone title for PS3, early scenes of which were shown to wide acclaim when revealed at E3 earlier this year. The studio is also developing a further game within the Killzone universe for the PSP. Guerrilla signed an exclusive development agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe in March 2004 and the acquisition will help the team grow as a key creative element of the SCE Worldwide Studios network."

Try Dot-Tunes free during December

 Thehub Apps Noframebig

This is pretty cool, especially for streaming your iTunes library to your PSP!

::: UPDATE :::

I was just looking at and playing with this software.  Overall pretty neat.  My main objective was to stream my music over the wireless network to my PSP.  I got everything to work fine, but there is 1 small oversight which can be easily fixed.  When clicking on a song in the PSP browser, it wants to SAVE the file to my memory stick.  That defeats the point of doing this.  With the new 2.6 firmware release on the PSP, they have incorporated RSS (sort of) into the mix.  The so called RSS is really just a way to STREAM audio to the PSP via an RSS feed.  In this particular case, that would work great!  If these guys could incorporate RSS feeds into the next release, they would be officially kicking butt in the PSP community.

Try Dot-Tunes free during December:

dottunesDot-Tunes is an iTunes web server that makes sharing your music across a network, local or the web, nice and easy (we first took a brief look at Dot Tunes in October).  It looks pretty nice, and this may be just the time to try it out. The folks at DotPod have announced that you can use Dot-Tunes without the ten track demo restriction or the ten minute time limit for the next few weeks.

Here's the catch: To activate the extended demo, you must register with a server tracker. This will allow you to see other servers out there in the ether, as well as be seen by them. All of this is to encourage you to register before January of 2007, when Dot-Tunes will experience a price increase. Get it while you can.

ChillArt offers free PSP eyecandy

[ via PSP Fanboy ]

ChillArt offers free PSP eyecandy:

This is more of a singular offering than a range, but you can't beat that "free" price tag. This all appears to be an effort for artsy-fartsy ChillArt to market their quasi-existentialist mindjob videos to a whole new range of portable players, but we're not ones to discount variety in public taste. There's bound to be a market out there for those who like videos of rapidly edited, zoomed-in clips of oil paintings set to electronica, right?

Sony Launches TV Network Service For PSP

SonyPSP-thumb.jpg Sony is almost starting to see the light here.  I think they are right on target with this service, unfortunately, they are on some serious crack if they expect to charge the same as a video download from the iTunes music store, but have it expire 2 weeks later.  Wrong answer.  You want me to pay for content?  I better damn well be able to keep it and archive it for future viewing at my convenience.  Get with the program Sony!

[ via Gizmodo ]

Sony Launches TV Network Service For PSP:

Those in Japan are going to get the goods from Sony very soon. Sony is launching a new network TV service for the PSP to showcase its capabilities. The service works through the PSP's Wi-Fi connection to grab content via the Sony Portable TV Network. Users will be able to download videos, movies, music videos, and more at about $3 a pop. The problem is that it's more like a rental service. The videos expire within 1 to 2 weeks and then are no longer viewable.

PSP eBooks

ShakespeareYet another great resource for your PSP...

[ via PSP Fanboy ]

You got your literature on my PSP. No, you got your PSP on my literature.:

Two great tastes come together as one when your PSP meets a library full of classic literature. Of course, ebook reading is nothing new to the PSP, but it has sometimes been a bit of an irksome process to track down and transfer books.

Luckily, the community has psp.manybooks.net to simplify things for us. And when they say "many books," they mean it, backing the claim up with a library of nearly 12,000 classic works.

Each ebook is available to be read live, page-by-page via your PSP's browser, or you can go old-school and download the ebook for transfer to your memory stick.

So, next time Mom says you've been playing too much PSP, you can tell her you're reading Shakespeare (or you can at least load some up real quick so that she thinks your feeding your brain instead of destroying it.)

Firmware 2.60 for PSP released

[ via PSP Fanboy ]

Homebrewers beware; the newest 2.60 firmware update for PSP is now available for download via the console's Network Update feature. From what we can tell, the most useful feature upgrades for this 18MB update are the ability to play WMA files and an RSS channel. Disappointingly, WMA digital rights management is not supported, so any chance of being able to download and use music from subscription-based services like Napster or Yahoo pretty much goes out the window.

The RSS channel, which is really just a corporate-y moniker for Internet radio, gets our vote for most practical addition. Those who missed out on PSPRadio because they moved up from firmware 1.5 should be happy to note that they can now get streaming Internet soundage as well, although you may have a heck of a time searching for a usable radio or podcast feed.

Of course, upgrading means being yet another step farther from being able to run homebrew on your PSP, especially if you've already been suckered convinced into taking the firmware 2.5 plunge. With significant gains already being made towards wheedling a path through 2.0, perhaps updating to 2.6 now may seem a little foolhardy. That RSS channel's mighty tempting though.

PSP: Better late than never...

Pspmm
It's been I dunno how many months now since the official launch of the Sony PSP, and until now I have had to go without.  In my single days, I would have been first in line to get this, but alas - being married with a kid, the wife can put the kibosh on my so-called "frivolous purchases" these days.  However, never underestimate the power of knowing the right people in the right places.  Thanks to my good buddy Abe, I got the hookup on a brand spankin new PSP for my personal entertainment pleasure.

After having this beast for the better part of the week, I have come to the conclusion that this little thing absolutely KICKS ASS.  The video quality is stunning.  Pictures, wallpapers and videos look amazing.  I have to admit, I don't really use it that much for music (not at all to be exact), mainly because the iPod just can't be beat when it comes to that.  I have been really jonsing for a video iPod, but after getting this PSP, the video iPod just isn't that compelling for me anymore.  This little device does all that, AND plays some pretty wicked video games to boot.  I currently have 2 games, SOCOM 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.  I have got to tell you that these 2 games are just incredible.  The online game-play and use of the headset and mic in SOCOM is awesome.  I am still in disbelief at the quality of the graphics on such a small device.  Don't get me wrong, a PSP is not going to stand up to an XBOX 360, but for a portable gaming platform, it is amazing.

Other features which are insane is the WiFi and built-in web browser.  I just can't believe how well this little browser renders just about anything I come across.  The best is those PSP formatted websites and portals.  People have done some great work squeezing a lot of information into a small area and making it usable.  It has inspired me to actually roll out a dedicated PSP section of my business website (when I finally finish updating it).  I can think of an insane amount of things to do with this device and I am amazed more folks have not developed apps and sites centered around the PSP.  Looks like a solid market just ripe for the picking.

With all that being said, the PSP is not without it's downsides.  The WiFi should have been 802.11g instead of (b).  That was a huge mistake.  The lack of a built-in hard drive is just about the most stupid mistake I can think of on this device.  For something that is geared to play video, there is just something wrong with expecting people to buy a bunch of Memory Sticks to store their media on.  Ohhhh yeah.......wait a second.  Isn't SONY the manufacturer of those proprietary little things?  Yeah, I thought so.  That kind of crap just really pisses me off. And what is up with this UMD format?  Stupid, just plain old STUPID.  Again, Sony with their proprietary strangle on the market.  Hasn't Sony learned their lesson yet?  Apparently not.  How they can think I am going to spend MORE on a UMD disc than an actual DVD, and be stuck with a disc that only works on my PSP is utter stupidity at it's finest.  They can expect ZERO UMD Movie sales from this PSP owner.  I will buy the games and nothing else.  I also think the games are WAY overpriced.  Again, this is a portable device that can't stand up to the full-blown big brother PS2 or an Xbox.  For most of these games, I would rather own the console version.

All-in-all, I still give this thing a solid review.  For a tech junkie, I would say it's a must have.  I can only hope that future generations of the PSP take my gripes into consideration, because that is about the only way I will spend my hard-earned cash to upgrade to the next gen PSP.  I am adding a PSP category to the blog and will add the PSP to the list of things I cover.  Within the next few days, I hope to put up a list of some of the best PSP sites out there and some useful resources for PSP owners, especially those on a Mac.  For now, back to PSPeeeing in bed. :-)
