Kenwood Fineline VRS-N8100 Ships

Kenwood Fineline VRS-N8100 Ships:

kenwood_vrs-n8100.jpg imageAs of today, Kenwood’s new top-tier Fineline VRS-N8100 combo A/V receiver and digital media streamer is supposed to be shipping, and she looks like a beaut. Not only is there the obligatory Ethernet port and the ability to play back almost anything you can imagine (though, notably, not DiVX, at least according to the listed spec), it also features a PCMCIA slot so you can attach your favorite card reader, and DSP to clean up and restore the high frequencies so often mangled by lossy audio codecs. The only thing missing is a Wi-Fi connection, though with that PCMCIA slot it might be a tempting hack for the A/V geek with no budget limitations.

Xenium OS-loaded solderless Xbox modchip

Xenium OS-loaded solderless Xbox modchip:

xboxA group called Team Xodus have released a new Xbox modchip that is not only solder-free (so you don’t have to heat up metal and burn your nubbins to install the thing) but already comes with an operating system on the chip, meaning that wily h@x0rs will be able to run Linux and a bevy of other unholy applications on their Xbox once this thing is installed. What’s more, the OS has been time-tested and is already at version 2.0, including webserver software and SMB support. Since it comes with the OS onboard users simply need to install the thing and go crazy – no more LAN file transfer nightmares and late-night Frankenstein scenes of doom.

Tungsten T5 to surface next week?:

Tungsten T5

Is next week the week for the Tungsten T5? The Reg says that palmOne is definitely going to cut prices on a bunch of their handhelds next month and that they could drop their new flagship Tungsten T5 on us as early as this coming Monday. No confirmation on specs, or even a reliable photo of what it’s supposed to look like (just tons of fakes like the one at right), but supposedly (and we’ll place a big emphasis on the supposedly) the T5 is going to have a 520MHz processor, a large 320 x 480 pixel LCD screen, Bluetooth, and possibly as much as 256MB of memory.

"Motorola's erstwhile chip division, Freescale, is expected to launch its latest G4-class processor, the MPC7448, today at its Smart Networks Developer Forum, being held this week in Frankfurt,' Tony Smith reports for The Register. "The new chip is Freescale's first 90nm G4 and is based on the company's e600 core, the foundation for Freescale's upcoming line of dual-core chips. Toshiba's 37LZ150 37-incher with MetaBrain:

Toshiba 37LZ150

We are in love. Can we say we are in love? Toshiba’s new 37LZ150 MetaBrain (don’t ask) 37-inch LCD TV has a network connection (but seriously, what doesn’t these days? Not that we’re complaining…) for streaming video off your network. We know, it’s all that, but they didn’t just stop there; it also acts as a proper host itself, and has integrated browsing software so you can get online without the fuss and muss (however small) of an MSN TV 2-like device—we specifically said TV internet wasn’t going to be good until it was high-def and on a super fat pipe (you know the Japanese have fiber to the home, right?). If you get email while watching a show, you can pull it up without interrupting your programming. And to sweeten the deal, the TV can record shows (presumably to networked drives) on schedule or by sending it an emails with instructions on what and when to record (in case you forget). And it has an SD port for transcoding MPEG4 video, so you can record your favorite shows as you please, and then watch them on the way to work with your cellphone (assuming it can do that sort of thing). Anyone else feel like they’re living in the future?

BlackBerry 7290, first Blackberry with Bluetooth:

BlackBerry 7200 series

Don’t ask us why it took them so long to get around to it in the first place (especially considering their target market of go go go business people), but Research In Motion just rolled out the first BlackBerry with Bluetooth. So the good news is that you’ll be able to use the BlackBerry 7290 with a wireless Bluetooth headset, the bad news (at least for anyone here in the States) is that the only carrier who’ll have it for now is O2, which’ll offer it in Britain, Ireland, and Germany starting in November. They’ve also made a few other small improvements, like a brighter backlight and upping the amount of memory to 32MB.

UPDATE: Bad news become good news. Cingular will have this here in the US starting next month. [Thanks, Chris]

Micro-management with GPS/cellphone

Micro-management with GPS/cellphone:

xora

That crafty mid-level manager has been watching you over your work-cellphone for awhile now, so it’s probably best to resist the urge to head over to O-Malleys for a quick tipple. The GPS-cellphone as employee-monitor has been the cause of endless privacy vs. security squabbles, and confused workers might be best off tossing their spying handsets in a ditch. While the leader of the mobile-monitoring pack has been Nextel with their Mobile Locator, recently the mobile tracking firm Xora has released services like “geofences” which sets off an alarm when the employee goes to a previously no-no designated area (we bet 80% of these are bars). The technology should remind you of that pet GPS collar which sends email alerts to the pet owner when Rover dashes outside of the confines of his monitored fenced-in yard. Though since the E911 mandate (which says that cellular carriers must enable 95% of their cellphones to be tracked when the user dials 911, by the end of 2005) has been creating the boon for GPS/cellphone systems, then we guess that most employers using GPS/cellphone tracking are just trying to look out for their employee’s safety - right? Though that excuse doesn’t really hold up with the geofences alert system, unless the employer’s going to claim it’s aiding with employee alcohol abuse.

Alpine KCA-420i iPod Interface Reviewed

Alpine KCA-420i iPod Interface Reviewed:

alpine_ipod_rev.jpg image

Lots of people have been looking forward to Alpine's KCA-420i iPod interface unit for the Ai-NET head units (which is to say, a nice way to hook up an iPod to your Alpine car stereo). Playlist Magazine got a hold of review unit and took it out for a spin, but I can't say I'm exactly happy with the results. They say it's the best iPod car interface they've used, but it definitely seems that the KCA-420i unit was an afterthought. Alpine blames the wonky interface on head units not exactly designed to handle the thousands of songs that can exist in an iPod's catalog, but that's no excuse for the odd choices they made in some of the button-combination choices.

There's hope, though. Alpine plans on tweaking for the 2005 models. Perhaps they'll even make a head unit with enough oomph to handle the iPod as a proper input source.

Verizon Wireless to get the Treo 650 in mid-November?:

Treo 650 smallest

We’ll toss out the usual caveat that there is zero official confirmation for this, but we’re now hearing that Verizon Wireless is likely to start carrying the new Treo 650 sometime in mid-November, which sorta makes sense since we got confirmation that Sprint should be getting it sometime in late November. Still haven’t heard much about when any of the other carriers might be getting, and as is all too common when it comes to these things, they could always push back (or move forward) the release date.

Beyond Re-Animator: PATRIOT II Rises Again

Beyond Re-Animator: PATRIOT II Rises Again:

It looks like death was just the beginning for the never-introduced "Domestic Security Enhancement Act of 2003," otherwise known as "PATRIOT II." As the Associated Press, LA Times, and Washington Post reported last week, lawmakers are circulating draft legislation that breathes new life into some of the most threatening provisions in PATRIOT II. The draft legislation is meant to implement intelligence reforms as recommended by the 9/11 Commission Final Report, but goes far beyond those recommendations -- including giving federal agents the power to use secret foreign intelligence warrants and wiretap orders against people unconnected to any terrorist group or foreign nation. In other words, it proposes lowering the legal standards for surveillance so that the government has the same leeway to spy on people like you and me as it does those suspected of being international agents or terrorists.

EFF has acquired a copy of the draft legislation (PDF), introduced this past Friday. Peter Swire offers a brief analysis of the bill on the Politech list, echoing our concerns:

Without the requirement of a link to a foreign power, there are grave constitutional questions about whether this secret wiretap is allowed under the Fourth Amendment. Furthermore, the "lone wolf" provision opens the door wide to surveillance of citizens for domestic surveillance and law enforcement purposes. Searches within the US should still presumptively be done in compliance with the Fourth Amendment.

Presumptively, indeed.

Spysats Keeping Watch on the U.S.:

Anonymous And Slightly Nervous Coward writes "USA Today is carrying an AP story that claims three years' worth of domestic satellite surveillance courtesy of a DoD agecy called the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. Their work includes getting cooperation from entities pointing cameras onto private property such as hotels (all you HOPE and Defcon attendees, please wave for the camera). The agency seems to be taking the aw-shucks line on what they know and to what extent they evaluate the data they get, but it's clear that their mandate is seriously overpowering the oversight structures that would normally be watching it."

Aston Martin DB9 engines get neural network:

Aston Martin DB9

We hope only cars get smarter than their masters right quick so we have less middle-finger interactions with the seemingly infinite supply of road-idiots out there—anything to take the pain out of getting from point A to point B is good news right proper. Aston Martin taken it upon themselves to add the first adaptive neural network to their DB9’s V-12 engines to prevent misfiring, which is apparently rather common in those kinds of cars. (Come on now, we really know it’s actually a distributed computing project to discover the meaning of life.) The system listens to the noise the engine makes, and if everything sounds alright, you’ll never even notice the system kicking in—unless things are going seriously wrong and some of the cylinders go into shutdown mode. Either way, we’re sure 007 (Sean Connery only, if you please) would approve.

HP's iPod tattoos sometimes leave a little something behind:

HP iPod tattoo

So one of the big selling points of those new iPod “tattoos” from HP is that you can trick out your iPod without risking any permanent damage to it (or looking really behind the times—that Hives tattoo is already starting to look very five minutes ago). We had no problem peeling the tattoo off the iPod we we were playing with at HP’s booth at that media event we hit last week, but there’ve been a few complaints here and there of them leaving a sticky residue on some people’s iPods, and Jillian Myers has blogged the entire saga she went through to try and get to the bottom of why the tattoo she put on her iPod left behind an unwelcome reminder of its existence.

Xbox 2 to use Virtual PC 7 for backwards compatibility. Maybe.:

Xbox2 design pic

In the latest speculation regarding Xbox 2 backwards compatibility, Apple Insider is reporting that delays of Virtual PC 7 are due to the fact that the project has been given “exclusively to the Xbox team.” Why? In order to ensure Xbox backwards-compatibility on the Xbox 2, that’s why. You see, Xbox 2 is slated to run on the PowerPC 970 chip, and current Xbox 2 developer kits are PowerMac G5s. While these rumors haven’t been confirmed by Microsoft (like they’d do that), we can’t think of any good reason that the Xbox team would be working on Virtual PC graphic emulation other than to guarantee Xbox backwards compatibility for the Xbox 2.

Kubotec's man-sized speakers

Spotted at Tokyo’s Hi-End Show, a showcase for preposterously expensive audio gear, were these speakers from Kubotek. Aside from having a shape that suggests the result of a warped mind playing with a Donald Duck head, a jumbo pot of varnish and a mirror, they stand 174 cm tall, which is, well, bigger than the guy in the black t-shirt. When these come out in spring 2005 a pair of them will set you back Y7.35 mn ($66,000), which is probably about what it’ll cost to put a down payment on the massive, soundproofed apartment you’ll need to put them in.

Floridians, beware: monkey can actually hack Diebold voting machines:

All politics aside, we’re 100% for throwing monkeys at gadgets (both literally and figuratively) to see what they can (and can’t) do with them. In this case, Black Box Voting is suggesting that the Diebold voting machines are so flawed that even monkey can 0wn it. Apparently there’s a a hidden black box0like record keeping program that resides on Diebold’s election software—this is already pretty awful, as vote record keeping should always be paper-based. This application is a “secret” feature enabled by a two-digit trigger (not a “bug” or an accidental oversight; it’s a feature), and apparently even an untrained monkey (the real kind) can get in there and manipulate records. So please don’t blame us if we’re spending a little extra time in the booth trying figure this one out, we shouldn’t be more than a couple of minutes (assuming we’re of comparable intelligence with Baxter the monkey who, if allowed into a voting stall, might rule the free world with a simple hack).

PalmSource intros new OS for smartphones

PalmSource intros new OS for smartphones:

treo

So PalmSource, the company which oversees and develops the Palm operating system, is announcing a new version of their software that’s specifically for smartphones that they hope will end up on lots of other cellphones besides palmOne’s Treo 600 (pictured at right). Not exactly a total surprise since they’d revealed their plans a little while ago to continue to develop Palm OS 5 (now known as Garnet) specifically as a smartphone OS, and this signals the beginning of what will probably shape up to be a big three-way battle between PalmSource, Windows Mobile, and Symbian for control of the smartphone market. The Treo obviously already runs on a customized-version of the Palm OS, but apparently they’re adding all sorts of stuff to make it even more suitable, like BlackBerry-like email software, a new brwoser designed specifically for cellphone screens, and better support for Bluetooth and WiFi. Of course, there’s no word on what non-Treo smartphones will end up with the new OS first.

A Liquid That Turns Solid When Heated

A Liquid That Turns Solid When Heated:

Roland Piquepaille writes "There are some sure things in life, such as death and taxes. When you are heating a solid, you expect it will melt and when you're boiling water, you're pretty certain that it will turn into vapor. But what about a liquid that becomes solid when it's heated? Of course, it has already been done, for example in the chemical process of polymerization. But now, PhysicsWeb writes that a team of French physicists has discovered a law-breaking liquid that defies the rules. When you heat it between 45 and 75C, it becomes solid. But the process is fully reversible, and this is a world's premiere. When you decrease the temperature, this solid melts and turns again into a liquid. I'm not sure of the implications of such a phenomenon, but it's fascinating. Read more for essential details."

Available in 250GB or 300GB versions (7200RPM, 16MB cache, FireWire, USB 2.0), the new drives will come bundled with Dantz Retrospect backup software that should allow you to retain a series of incremental backups with history, so that if you'd like to retrieve an older version of a document - like say from a couple weeks back - you can pull up the older version even if you've made multiple changes. As the drive fills up, it will start axing older versions to free up space.

There's also a DriveLock feature which password protects the contents of the drive if it is powered down, but it's not clear if this could just be defeated by removing the drive itself from the chassis or if all the data is saved in an encrypted form at all times (I suspect the former).

First look at Canon's 16 megapixel EOS-1DS Mark II

DPNow has a first look at Canon’s recently announced professional-series 16.7 megapixel Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II (the name is a wee bit long, but what can you do?), which is an upgrade of the EOS-1Ds, just with double the resolution, 802.11b/g support via an add-on, and new image processing software. If you just have to own the latest, highest resolution digital camera, and have ten large to drop on a digital camera, this would be it. Then again, DPNow does point out that Nikon’s 12 megapixel D2X is cheaper, faster, and lighter, so comparisons are bound to happen when both cameras are officially released. Gotta love the rivalry.

Mossberg: Apple iMac G5 'powerful, affordable, virus-free with better, more modern OS than Windows XP'

"I am writing these words on the most elegant desktop computer I've ever used, a computer that is not only uncommonly beautiful but fast and powerful, virus-free and surprisingly affordable," Walter S. Mossberg writes for The Wall Street Journal. "This machine takes up no more space on a desk than a flat-panel monitor. In fact, the entire computer is contained behind a flat-panel screen in a space just 2 inches thick -- thinner than most flat-panel...

Toyota's Digital Hub for Cars

Toyota's Digital Hub for Cars

toyota_hub.jpg imageToyota is showing off their new "Toyota Hub" at the Mondial de l'Automobile this weekend, a centrally-linked integrated system that orients around a removable PDA, connecting together the PDA, cell phones, MP3 players, and cameras into an all-in-one system that intelligently uses the car itself for things like sound and tactile interface. The best part? This isn't just a concept system - Toyota plans on offering it as an option as soon as next month.

If anyone happens to pick up a car with the system we'd love to hear what you think of it.

Time Magazine's Gadget of the Week: Apple's iMac G5

"If you're big enough of an Apple fan to own an iPod, you probably already have a good idea of what the iMac G5 is all about: the familiar white sheen, the brushed metal L-shaped stand, the brilliant widescreen LCD. Throw in Apple's wireless Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and you've got a scene of Kubrickian merits. Only the cable that runs from computer to an iPod (or printer or digital camera or PDA) disrupts the sci-fi harmony. In terms of actual computing power, it occupies a nice...

But now, after having his new Apple Powerbook for little over a month, he's enthusiastically joined the bandwagon," Owen Hearey reports for The Columbia Daily Spectator.

Black 4G iPod

We wouldn’t have really seriously considered it before, but Colorware’s blackened version of the fourth-gen iPod actually looks pretty good. Or at least better than we thought it would. Or maybe it just wasn’t such a great move for Apple to decide to make the click-wheel a different color than the rest of the iPod.

Ok people, lets get one thing straight. This is FAR, and I do mean FAR, from an iMac G5 killer. I saw one of these things up close and personal today and it is so damned ugly that it could scare donkeys away. The sheer CHEAP look and feel of this machine is absolutely ghastly. I seriously don't remember the last time I saw something so poorly made. Space saving? What a joke. Floppy drive - why? Canon's turn: the EOS-1Ds Mark II digital SLR, the PowerShot SD20, the PowerShot SD200, and the PowerShot SD300

Alright, rounding things out, Canon dropped four new cameras on us today, including that EOS-1Ds Mark digital SLR that we speculated about yesterday, the PowerShot SD20, the PowerShot SD200, and the PowerShot SD300. Here’s the dirt on each of them:

Just like everyone expected, the EOS-1Ds Mark II is Canon’s 16.7 megapixel follow-up to the EOS-1Ds, which bumps up the megapixel count by nearly six million and sports faster continuous shooting of 4 fps. Other upside: a new 802.11g attachment so you can wireless beam your photos back to a PC over a WiFi network (yep, Nikon has
one of those, too).

Canon’s smallest five megapixel digital camera, the PowerShot SD20 will come in four different colors (they even have faux impressive-sounding names like Platinum Silver, Midnight Blue, Bordeaux Red and Storm Grey) and is really small and all that, but they cut one big corner to get there: no optical zoom lens.

Except for the difference in resolution, the threemegapixel PowerShot SD200 and the four megapixel PowerShot SD300 (pictured above) are essentially the same camera. Both have a 3x optical zoom lens and are just eight-tenths of an inch thick.

Looking for Web Patterns

Looking for Web Patterns

Feeding off of Monday's post about Design Standards I came across a great resource for UI Patterns and Techniques which sheds some light on how UIs should be architected and designed. It's important to note that be it design standards or UI patterns, these are all just guidelines that one should be encouraged to follow, but they are by no means rules that you must follow. Another great resource along these lines is Patrick Lynch and Sarah Horton's Web Style Guide, now in its 2nd edition and available in print and on the Web. I can't tell you how much the Web Style Guide has helped me architect, design and develop more effective, efficient, and intuitive web sites since I first stumbled across the site in 1997. It's well worth the time investment to read this resource. [from: The Daily Div]

In-flight cellphones on Airbus planes by 2006?

When British Airways CIO bitched that plane makers should be building new wireless technologies into airplanes rather than expecting them to be retrofitted (and thus grounded for extended periods of time), we guess Airbus was listening, since they decided it’d be a good time to announce that they’d made some progress towards enabling in-flight cellphone use (not that we’re dying to have to listen to fellow passengers yammer away while we’re buckled in or anything). During recent test flights Airbus was able to use cellphones to successfully call and send text messages to both people on the ground and other mid-air cellphones. The test flights used an onboard base station which routed calls with the Globalstar satellite communications network to ground cellular networks, and yes, it’s absolutely shocking, but they didn’t encounter any navigation or communication problems. They’re predicting that in-flight cellphone service could be a reality as early as 2006.

Gear Eye: Sony Ericsson's K700i

Gear Eye: Sony Ericsson's K700i

There seems to be a certain type of girl in every school or every movie about high school. She’s not the absolute hottest girl in class, but she’s hot enough that no dude would ever turn her down for a date. She’s not just good looking, but she’s smart too. Not like Angelina Jolie in Hackers smart, but still smart enough to be an honor student kicking most people’s ass GPA-wise. If you were a nerd, you wanted to hate this girl - she was too pretty to be that smart and too smart to be that pretty - but you couldn’t because she was nice too. She would talk to you like you weren’t a loser. She might have even done something really nice for you once or twice. She was hot and smart, and somehow it didn’t all go to her head - she was your dream date.

The K700 is that girl. Some people may not like the new style compared to the T610/T630 but it’s still good looking. Sony Ericsson has beefed up the camera, the processor and the software, so it’s smart. And to put the phone over the top, Sony Ericsson has added a hundred helpful touches to the interface, making it the kindest phone in the English-speaking world. It’s not fair.

The K700i is available through many importers like
Expansys, and soon it will be available directly through Sony Ericsson’s US online store.

The Bod: Oh Yah!

Some people think that the K700 is a step back from uninterrupted clean lines of the T610/T630 series. The bottom is now gently curved instead of square. Normally we have a thing against phones with curved bottoms, because if you put them in your front pocket instead of your change pocket, they fall over and make an ugly bulge. The K700 is so small it easily slips into a Levi’s change pocket, so we didn’t find the curved bottom annoying. We also did not find the bulge on the containing the camera lens loudspeaker a problem because the phone is still plenty small despite it. Both factors make the K700 more comfortable than its predecessors, so we can’t hold the shape against it.

The keyboard is equally well designed. The large keys on the face, as well as the keys on the sides are all easy to press and distinguish from each other. The only thing i didn’t love about the physical part of the phone was the joystick. it was so small that it took a little while until i could get the pressure right for it. Until then I’d wind up just brushing over it or pressing in on it or just generally not getting it to go where I wanted it to go half the time. Still I haven’t used a phone I would complain about less than this one (and that’s a big compliment).

Battery Life:
Yup

The battery life hasn’t improved much on these new Sony Ericssons. The K700 still gets about 4 days of use per charge (3 if you get online all the time). You could probably take the phone with you for a long weekend and leave the charger at home, but I would pack it if you’re going to be gone longer than 3 days just in case. As with previous Sony Ericsson models, the battery meter is awfully deceptive. The first half takes forever to drain and the last half goes in like 36 hours.

Sound and Signal: Oh Yah!

The K700 locks on to a signal and doesn’t let go. It’s got a pit bull for an antenna — and it’s totally internal — nothing to poke you while it’s in your pocket. I got good reception everywhere I took this phone, it even did well deeper into dead zones than most other phones I’ve tried.

The speaker is crisp, clean and loud. As a testament to just how awesome the speaker and microphone on the K700, I took this phone to the kart track (What you think we sit inside and stare at the computer all day long?) and was able to hold a normal conversation over the din of 2-stroke engines screaming along at 8000 rpm or wherever it is that we try to keep those things (there’s no tachs in our karts).

Menus:
Oh Yah!

This is the first phone that literally kisses your ass. Pretty much every time you click on something, the phone tries will ask if you want to jump two steps ahead because it thinks you want to, and you know what? It’s right almost every time. The SMS addressing screen keeps a list of recently used phone numbers handy. The contacts list lets you dial without clicking into a contact’s entry. The web jump screen has a Google search box. I honestly have never used a more user friendly phone. And if you ever manage to get stuck despite the thoughtful interface, the left softkey is “Help” in most places. sony Ericsson should get an award for this. Seriously. It’s the first UI to beat Nokia’s Series 40 for ease of use.

Calling: Yup

We can’t keep giving the K700 an “Oh Yah!” rating if it doesn’t do anything exceptional. As for calling, this phone doesn’t do any better than most other GSM phones. Everything — voice mail, redial, Call, End, Hold — it’s all exactly where you’d expect it to be. That’s good, just not out of this world.

Politeness: Yup

There are at least 2 ways to set the K700 from the home screen, both of them are obvious if you look at the screen of the keys at all. It has profiles (which you can assign voice commands to). Silencing an incoming call is also obvious. The only thing keeping this phone from getting an “Oh Yah!” in politeness is the fact that the volume keys do not control the ringer volume (they never have on Sony Ericssons). They only control the volume during a call.

Contacts:
Oh Yah!

The K700 can hold a multitude of phone numbers for each contact, plus an email address. Despite that we still wish it could store a postal address, especially since it can accept vCards and sync to Outlook or the Mac Address Book. When you first use the phone, a wizard will ask if you want to copy the numbers from your SIM into the phone (See? We told you this phone is constantly kissing your butt.) so they are easier to get to from the Contacts menu. The Contacts menu itself is well thought out and it’s equally easy to add numbers from the Contacts or from the Call list or wherever.

Messages: Oh Yah!

Composing an SMS or MMS on the T610 was one of the things I hated most. It was circuitous and involved way too many extra key presses. The K700 has not only brought this task in line with how easy it is on all other phones, it has surpassed the rest. There are two simple reasons why it’s so easy. First when you push left on the joystick, the K700 brings up a simple selector : new text message or new picture message. Only Nokia Series 60 has been this friendly until now. After composing your message, the K700 really shines. On the screen that contains the usual dialog asking where you’d like to select a destination from, the phone actually populates the screen with a list of recently messaged and recently called contacts. so nine times out of 10 the person you want to send a message to is already on that screen.  It’s genius. Setting up an email account is the same as on the previous models - you can tell the phone how many days’ mail to poll for and compose replies to messages pretty easily.

Calendar: Oh Yah!

Although it’s confusing, Sony Ericsson uses 4 different classifications for their appointments in the Calendar application; each one offers slightly different options. However once you get to know them all, the Calendar is very powerful and has an excellent alarm manager. It syncs events from Outlook or iCal including their alarms equally well. The alarm clock is easy to set once you find it, and it will wake you (albeit with a dangerous “snooze” option on screen, even if the phone is powered off.

Browsing:
Yup

The K700 has a button on the right side of the handset that quickly jumps to the browser. The home screen includes a few handy links, including a quick link to Google’s WAP page. These are nice touches, but it’s just not much fun to browse on the small screen I mean the screen’s not really small — it’s the smartphone standard 176 x 220, but for some reason it just feels small. Pages also seem to load a little slower than they do on other handsets. We’re not sure if this is due to the browser itself or to some GPRS issues. Either way it’s perfectly acceptable, but it’s not snappy.

Pictures: Yup

After what seems like a very long press on the camera button that lives above the volume controls, the camera application launches. It takes you right to the viewfinder (good so far) and it’s easy to use the camera from there. Despite the fact that Sony Ericsson beefed the camera up from previous models (it’s finally VGA), the pictures are still mediocre. They are washed out during the day and the night mode is still really noisy. However I will say that I always have caught amazing sunsets in all their glory with Sony Ericsson phones and the K700 is no different. This phone rules at dusk and dawn.

Personalization:
Oh Yah!

The K700 can play ringtones in just about any format, including MP3. You can download, or even make your own themes, including animated home screens and screen savers. You can also customize short cuts using the joystick as well as voice commands. But you’re stuck with the silver body — no faceplates or covers for this phone. Ha!

Other Stuff:

The games on the phone are ok, but you can download better ones. There is an IM / presence program, but it uses the global village protocol, so it can’t really connect you to any IMs you care about. It’s got IR and Bluetooth. The Bluetooth must have something weird going because it doesn’t particularly like Macs.

In order to connect the phone to the new version of iSync, you must first initiate a Bluetooth pairing from the phone. Once that is complete, initiate a new pairing to the phone from your Mac. On the second pairing, the Mac will prompt you to add the phone to your iSync devices. This is the only way users (including us) have been able to get iSync to work with the K700i.

Siemens' SF65 cellphone is made out of white plastic...

Not sure how much of a bite they were really trying to take a bite out of Apple’s digital audio player (not that the association would hurt), but Siemens’ new SF65 cellphone definitely shares some of those same minimalist white plastic aesthetics. The SF65 Also sports a 1.3 megapixel digital camera (with flash), but there is one big difference between this and the iPod (besides the most obvious one): the SF65 definitely will not play MP3s. Comes out in Britain in January of next year. (Make sure you click to see a shot of the SF65 in action. Thanks, Dan.)

I'm not trying to horde traffic, but if you have tried successfully or unsuccessfully to set up APX in WDS mode with a third party router, please let me know so that the list can be as definitive as possible for future APX users." Here is the latest company to completely miss the customer service boat. I have owned a BookEndz docking station for my 15" TiPB for about 2 years now. I must say, it has been a rock solid and overall decent product. I have always used my docking station and connected it to a CRT monitor via the VGA port instead of the DVI port.

I just recently received my new 23" Aluminum Cinema Display (which will be used with my Dual 2.5GHz G5 whenever nVidia decides to get their act together and Apple ships me the box). So in the meantime, I figure I'll hook this bad boy up to my BookEndz Docking Station and take advantage of the real-estate on the desktop. When I hooked in the new monitor to the docking station via the DVI port, all sorts of weird stuff started happening. The display output was crackling and the video looked like it had some serious interference issues going on. I confirmed that the problem was not with the monitor by jacking into the TiPB directly and everything was fine.

I put a call into Photo Control and got a call back fairly promptly the next day. After explaining my situation to Paul, he had me read him some numbers on the bottom of the docking station. Those numbers confirmed that there was indeed a defect with the docking station I received. Although the unit has a 1 year warranty, I had no way of knowing that I had a defective product. I never received any notification via email, or snail mail that there was a potential problem with my unit. So now, after 2 years, when I finally do get a DVI monitor, it doesn't work due to a MANUFACTURER DEFECT. This is not like I hosed up the unit folks, they FULLY ADMIT that there were about 500 units that shipped before the problem was discovered. I am of the belief that this should be covered by the manufacturer at no cost due to the nature of the problem being their poor quality control and manufacturing for these few units. What was their compromise? They offered to swap out the logic board for about $50 or so. As if this damn piece of plastic is not expensive enough already, now I have to pay for their mistake? These guys are starting to take their cue from Microsoft it seems.

The worst part of this is that they considered $50 to be a deal (normal price is $75). I was getting the special treatment because I was an Apple consultant. Wow. Be still my heart. Well folks, let me tell ya....I come into contact with SEVERAL HUNDRED customers on a weekly basis, heck - it may possibly be into the thousands. What do you think I will be telling customers about my experience with BookEndz products? Bad move Photo Control. You have a decent product, but your lack of customer service has not only lost you my business, but potentially a significantly larger customer base as well.

I'm a huge fan of open-face helmets, even if they aren't as safe. Jaw-droppingly unsafe, you could say.

And if you're taking a call on the helmet and have stopped riding, the headset detaches and can be worn in a neck loop. Now I just need to get a bike.

Sony's Clie PEG-UZ90--the world's most expensive Palm?

Sony PEG-UZ90 align="middle" border="0" height="336" hspace="4" vspace="4" width="350" />

This may be the exception that proves the rule, but Sony shows that the PDA isn’t quite dead yet (at least not in
Japan) with their latest, the multimedia PEG-VZ90. It plays back MPEG-4 video and both ATRAC3 and MP3 audio
(hallelujah!), includes 802.11b wireless, and has a CF card slot that will take both communications and memory cards,
plus the usual MemoryStick slot. The multimedia angle is further emphasized by losing the keyboard (and camera) of
the PEG-UX50 in favour of a slide-out console of multimedia controls, and it looks like the preferred use for this
one will be to slam in a CF card or Microdrive loaded with video, though you need to encode with the proprietary
software (sound familiar?). Also, the pricing point is an awkward (OK, wallet-destroying) ¥95,000 ($870 US), which puts
it way above the hard-disk video players coming onto the market.

$100 off a new Sidekick II if they trade in their current one. All they have to do is call up a toll-free number, order
the new Sidekick, and send back their old one when the new one arrives. What we care more about is that the email
explicitly states that current owners are being given the chance to order the new model before it goes on sale, and
that the offer ends September 24. Our guess is that the new Sidekick goes on sale by Monday, September 27 at the
latest. It possible that it may even happen next week, since offers like this usually have a little overlap with the
actual product release.

We’re about to get a quite a few more cellphone towers
scattered all over the place. An almost-approved deal between cellular industry members and historic preservation
representatives would remove a bunch of limits on where cellphone towers are built and what hoops have to be
jumped through before they can go up. The cellphone companies are ecstatic of course (they get more towers and can
provide more coverage) but we’re sure there are groups out there lamenting the rise of yet more ugly transmitters
(something or other about them being highly dangerous sources of radiation). We certainly wouldn’t relish one
plopped down in front of our window. Aren’t there enough
trees to hide them in?

2005 C6 Corvette Reviewed

corvette_c6.jpg imageWe don't normally cover cars here on Gizmodo - we love them, but most of them are just more of the same - but when John Hallenborg offered to give us a review of the new 2005 Chevrolet Corvette (the C6), with a special focus on the gadgety interior, well... how could we resist?

Took a spin in a 2005 C6 Corvette, a six speed manual example in Millenium yellow (paint option: $750) with the Z51 performance package ($1,495). Thanks to dealer Corvette Mike of Anaheim, California, it was a grin-inducing drive, but I had a few reservations. The great news is that Chevrolet has gotten it right this time, as although the styling seems distinctly Italian-derived, the car has an integrated quality no previous Corvette has had. Construction is tight the way a good European car is tight. The interior is nice, tidily functional, much improved over its predecessor (the C5 was made from 1997-2004), which had an abundance of cheap plastic trim. Leather seats were comfortable, headroom good for me at six foot two inches, and ergonomics take a major role, unlike in any previous take on this American classic, an early version of which immortalized the brand name in the great Route 66 TV show (1960-1964).

Anyway, MSNBC's Krakow took the new BlackBerry 7100t out for a spin - available only on T-Mobile - and it looks really nice. Not only are the internals decent, with a quad-band, multi-network radio, Bluetooth, and an ample screen, but the new keyboard - you know, the really strange 20-key QWERTY version - reportedly gets the job done, thanks in large part to an extra-strength 'SureType' predictive text software.

And what do you know? They tossed in a free picture of the upcoming Nokia 9300 Communicator [pictured right], too. I like how these guys work.

Design Theft

Design Theft

One would generally think that maybe no one ever read Inspiration vs. Theft or that no one ever cared about where the fine line is drawn or if they crossed it... much less understand simple copyright laws or the words "All Rights Reserved" and what they actually entail. And never mind that there is a whole site dedicated to showcasing design theft. Why do I bring this up? Well, because today marks the 148th attempt at design theft of a Digital Web Magazine design. Here are a few rules of thumb:

  1. Always ask first, never take.

  2. Don't ever think you will go unnoticed, even on the Web.

  3. Read the site's copyright statement and/or policy first.

  4. See rule one above.

  5. Re-read rule one above.

If you feel none of these rules apply to you and you are going to take someone's web design, hire a good lawyer.

eBay: Apple/Siemens Newton NotePhone

eBay: Apple/Siemens Newton NotePhone

notephone.jpg imageI was never really into the Newton, but I hadn't realized they made a combination phone device like this Siemens NotePhone (probably because it was Europe-only). Not only did the NotePhone have a 336 x 240 screen (still decent), the unit added telephony and voice mail to the Newton itself, which could also be removed and used seperately. This auction is over, but there weren't any bids, so I bet you could still pick it up if you wanted to.

His starting bid was $365 (!), but they apparently used to sell for over a grand.

Time: Apple's new iMac G5 'quite possibly the coolest personal computer yet created'

"The best way to describe Apple's iMac G5, which goes on sale later this month, is to say it looks like an iPod on growth hormones. It's what you'd get if you stretched the pocket-size music player until it was 17 in. wide and 2 in. deep, squished a supercomputer into the casing and mounted the whole thing on a metal stand. The resemblance is not coincidental. More people buy iPods than iMacs these days, and Apple admits that this third-generation iMac is its best shot at luring...

2004 Confederate F124 HellCat

confed_hellcat.jpg imageThe new 2004 Confederate F124 HellCat is a hand-crafted, limited run, New Orleans-built motorcycle that puts 130 horsepower to the ground in over-the-top American style. Each of the V-Twin machines are assembled in batches of five or less and stripped of any extra needless ornamentation (well, they never put it on in the first place).

No idea about the price (they want you to call), but I think it's safe to say it's pretty darn expensive. (Thanks, Buck!)

Product Branding is a Bitch

puta_side.jpg imageJudging from the available specs of this all-in-one LCD PC, I'd guess it's probably not anything too new. That being said, I have to admit to being very amused by the fact that this UK firm has named their product line "Puta." There must have been a serious lack of Spanish or Filipino focus-testing on that one.

sony-hdr-fx1-big-1.jpg imageSony's new 3 CCD HDV camcorder, the HDR-FX1, has been formally introduced by the company after an initial preview at this year's CeBit. What makes it so special? Well, along with a host of other interesting features, the FX1 has the ability to capture video in 1080i at 60 interlaced frames per second. Add into that a projected street price of only around $3,500 and the FX1 becomes a pretty amazing piece of gear, and definitely one that will get most prosumer and semi-pro film makers all hot and bothered. The FX1 should be available in November, and a hands-on with the press is expected tomorrow (so expect to see more news). (Thanks, David!)

Space Shuttles Survive Hurricane Frances

Space Shuttles Survive Hurricane Frances

maggeth writes "In an update to a previous story, NASA damage assessment teams have begun work at the Kennedy Space Center, which was hit by Hurricane Frances. It appears that there was no damage to any of the space shuttles, according to the first word from NASA. Although more details still are to be released, we know that Frances died down in strength before making landfall, limiting the amount of wind damage." Reader knix writes, though, that "It looks like NASA did have quite a bit of damage from Hurricane Frances," pointing to an AP story which adds some detail, and noting that besides a knocked over Mercury-Redstone rocket, the massive VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building) had 1000 panels missing after the storm hit. According to the AP, "The holes left by the missing panels created 40,000 square feet of 'open window' on two sides of the building."

TiVo and Netflix to Partner for Downloadable Content?

Hey, guys. I'm sort of taking the day off from news - finishing up some freelance and doing a lot of behind-the-scenes catch up for Gizmodo - but this was just too interesting not to talk about. Newsweek is reporting that TiVo and NetFlix are planning on releasing a system that would allow subscribers of both services to download movies and television programs directly to their TiVos over broadband. There's no confirmation from the companies yet, but this could be huge. If they could figure out a way to let us take TiVoToGo onto mobile media devices, we could finally have an all-you-can-eat, legal video download option.

Quark in denial of InDesign trend

Quark in denial of InDesign trend

A Computer Business Review Online story posted today quotes Quark's UK marketing director Gavin Drake as saying, "There is no question that a small number of customers have or are switching to InDesign for various reasons and we wish them every success in this. However you have to put this in context, which is that this represents a very small percentage of the UK market and is certainly not a trend."

I say when BBC Magazines is one of those small numbers along with Hearst Publishing in the US, it may not be a trend, but it's sure heading in that direction.

Alienware Reveals 4GHz desktop

Isn't this special? On these lovely systems, when compared to Mac G5 Dual 2.5, you get to pay for these extras: 1) Restore CD $14 (who has ever charged for a restore CD?) 2) No Modem included - $67 extra if u want it 3) The 2 serial ATA drives they include are only 74GB vs. the standard 160GB in the G5. Heck you can throw 500GB in the G5 and only 400GB in the Alienware. 4) and a bunch more.

As a matter of fact, if you take the standard configuration sitting on the Alienware site right now, it will cost you a whopping $5458.00. And all that for the pleasure of running Windows XP on a 32 bit system. No thanks guys, for this price I will take a G5 2.5 Dualie and a 23" Cinema display (which is exactly what I just ordered).

Alienware Reveals 4GHz desktop

keeleysam writes "c|net news.com is reporting that Alienware is going to ship a 4GHz desktop. The new Area-51 ALX, introduced on Friday, uses overclocking, or the practice of pushing a processor past its factory speed setting, to elevate a standard Intel Pentium 4 chip to 4GHz. Because overclocking a processor can cause it to overheat, the desktop also includes a special liquid-cooling system devised by Alienware. Purchasing the 4GHz Area-51 ALX desktop is an expensive proposition for most consumers, as the machine starts at about $4,200, according to pricing on Alienware's ALX Web site."
