Tiger Previewed

Steve Jobs has been previewing some of the key features of Tiger at the WWDC in San Francisco. All the new stuff is on the Apple website, but here’s a diluted list :

  • iChat AV— updated to include multi-way AV conferencing (with a funky 3D interface).
  • Safari RSS— an updated version of Safari to allow reading and management of RSS feeds.
  • Dashboard— open & manage Konfabulator-style widgets
  • Spotlight— super-fast global search facility. Search through your contacts, iCal diaries and email as well as files.
  • Automator— create and deploy actions to perform common routines (in a great looking interface too).
  • Xcode 2.0— updated version of Apple’s IDE (with visual modelling and improved Java support).
  • VoiceOver— the much heralded Spoken Interface. A system-wide feature which makes Tiger the most accessible OS available.

nvidia_sli.jpg imageHello, Future. I believe we've met before, in the past. nVidia has announced SLI for the GeForce 6800 series of PCI Express video cards. What does that mean for you, the already broke-ass gamer? Well, if you buy one of the new, expensive Intel motherboards with the Tumwater chipset, you can connect two of Nvidia's top-end, $500 video cards together via a "Scalable Link Interface" MIO port, harnessing the power of both cards simultaneously to render game graphics. It won't be twice as fast; the received wisdom is around 50 percent faster than a single card, although Nvidia is claiming up to 90 percent faster frame rates in some situations.

Although it might be easy to brush off SLI as a toy for rich gamers who can drop $5,000 on a gaming rig without a second thought (and you'd be right, at the moment), in the near future the SLI will offer a handy way to boost the performance of your existing card -- just toss another one in there and go. Unfortunately, if history is any reference, by the time a second 6800 becomes affordable, buying a whole new, next-generation video card is probably a better option.

No word if this is the same technology that Alienware was touting around E3. It would certainly make more sense if it were, as Alienware isn't exactly known for pioneering cutting edge video hardware solutions. Looking at the pictures of Alienware's solution, the interconnects do look different, so maybe they figured out some magic of their own after all.

Intel using iBook in commercial?

MacFixIt has learned that the just-announced updated Power Mac G5 models are the first to include Apple's new "System Migration" feature. Apple's website states:

"Apple simplicity lets you add a Power Mac G5 to your creative studio without days of downtime configuring a new system. The new Mac OS X setup assistant helps you effortlessly move user accounts, system preferences, documents and applications from an old Mac to a new Power Mac G5 -- and the transfer is FireWire fast."

This feature evidently works in the following manner:

  • On first boot, you're given the opportunity to connect a FireWire cable between your new G5 and your old Mac.
  • The Setup Assistant walks you through various types of files on your old Mac -- user folders (and accounts), applications, system add-ons, etc. -- and lets you choose whether or not to transfer them to your new G5.
  • The Setup Assistant then proceeds to transfer the appropriate files and completes the setup process.

As moving from an old Mac to a new one has always been one of the biggest hassles involved in upgrading your computer system, we welcome the concept behind this new feature; we're anxious to see how well it performs in real-world use. If you've ordered a new Power Mac G5 and end up using the System Migration feature, please drop us a note at Late-breakers@macfixit.com.

UPDATE Since we first reported this new feature on Wednesday, we've received more details about the actual procedure courtesy of reader Brian, who sent us screenshots of the System Migration process (the first few steps of which are simply explaining how to use FireWire Target Disk Mode):

  1. Intro screen: The Setup Assistant asks the user:
Do You Already Have a Mac?
If you are already using a Mac equipped with FireWire, all the important information from the old Mac can be automatically transferred to this new one. To do this now, you will need to connect your old Mac to your new one using a FireWire cable. The information on your old Mac will not be affected.
The user is given the choices "Yes, transfer my information," "No, do not transfer my information," or "Learn More" (which we assume provides a Help Viewer window with more info).

  2. Step 1 screen: The next screen reads:
      Step 1: Connect FireWire Cable
Connect a FireWire cable between this new Mac and your old Mac. Press Continue when finished. If you don't want to transfer your important information, click Go Back.
If you are transferring from a portable Mac, be sure to cnnect it to a power adapter.

  3. Step 2 screen: The third screen reads:
Step 2: Restart Your Old Mac
Restart your old Mac while holding down the "T" key. Important: Continue holding down the "T" key until you see the FireWire symbol on your old Mac. This may take up to 30 seconds.

  4. Step 3 screen: The fourth step allows you to choose what data is to be transferred from the old Mac to the new one. The choices are:
    • User accounts (all or selected accounts)
    • Network settings
    • The root-level /Applications directory
    • "Files and folders" on the hard drive (We're assuming this means that the Setup Assistant searches for any other non-system-related files and folders not located inside user home directories, in order to ensure that no files are lost.)
As you select data types, the Setup Assistant shows how much hard drive space is available on the new Mac, along with the amount of space required by the data to be transferred.

  5. "Transferring" screen: After completing Step 3, the Setup Assistant begins the transfer of data, providing you with a progress screen noting which data is being transferred.

Apple has released version 4.6 of its iTunes audio software via Software Update and Web download. According to the (brief) release notes:

"iTunes 4.6 includes support for playing your music wirelessly using AirPort Express with AirTunes. It also includes a number of other minor enhancements."

UPDATE We previously covered (1, 2) an issue where iTunes 4.5 would not share Libraries containing more than 28,899 tracks. We've received reports from several MacFixIt readers that iTunes 4.6 fixes this problem. Reader "Gryffin" writes:

"I just upgraded to iTunes 4.6 on both my server (PowerMac G4 667) and my "living room" computer (Toshiba Portégé 7200), and I'm happy to report that the Toshiba read all 21,543 songs from the server with no problem. In fact, while I didn't time it, it seemed to load them faster than it used to under iTunes 4.1."

An Apple Knowledge Base article about this issue has been updated to confirm this fix: "Update to iTunes 4.6 to prevent this from occuring." [MacFixIt]

New Power Mac G5s

The new Power Mac G5 desktop line features dual 64-bit PowerPC G5 processors on every model. The top model, featuring two 2.5GHz processors, the industry’s fastest front-side bus running at 1.25GHz per processor and advanced liquid cooling starts at $2,999. The entry model, featuring dual 1.8GHz processors, starts at just $1,999. [Jun 9] [Apple Hot News]

Apple Computer Inc. on Wednesday announced three new dual-processor Power Mac G5 configurations, with the fastest model topping out at 2.5GHz. The new high-end systems miss the 3GHz mark that Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the company would achieve at last year's Worldwide Developers Conference, but Tom Boger, Apple's Director of Power Mac Product Marketing said it came down to a technology challenge that was bigger than they expected. Boger also said today that users shouldn't expect to see a G5 PowerBook before the end of the year because of the challenges of putting the G5 in a small enclosure. [MacCentral]

Pixar's public announcement that it won't be working with Disney after the end of its current distribution deal hasn't stopped Disney CEO Michael Eisner from holding out hope that the two studios can broker some sort of arrangement. "If the new Apple store in San Francisco looks like a Powerbook computer, it wasn’t deliberate.
