"Two years ago this month, Apple Computer released a small, sleek-looking device it called the iPod. A digital music player, it weighed just 6.5 ounces and held about 1,000 songs. There were small MP3 players around at the time, and there were players that could hold a lot of music. But if the crucial equation is 'largest number of songs' divided by 'smallest physical space,' the iPod seemed untouchable. And yet the initial reaction was mixed: the thing cost $400, so much more... [MacDailyNews]

This guy Dell can't be serious. So wait - let me get this straight...Dell spends half a BILLION dollars a year in R&D (similar to Apple as he states), yet Dell as a company owns NOTHING and manufactures NOTHING? EVERYTHING Dell sells is a 3rd party product branded with a Dell logo. They don't actually own anything that is THEIR technolgy to the best of my knowledge. Dell is nothing more than the Costco of the computer world and their only selling point is price. So tell me Mr. Dell, what exactly are you innovating and spending so much money on? It sure can't be on creating usable and stable machines because the last time I checked, Dell's are as useless as tits on a bullfrog. Are you sure you aren't hiding some of those massive losses from dropping your pants on $500 PC's and wrapping it into the "R&D" budget?
Michael Dell compares his company's R&D spending with Apple's in an interesting interview with Karen Southwick. [MacInTouch]

As annoying as junk mail is, there's something even worse about the move to HTML spam. If you display a piece of spam that uses HTML, the images aren't embedded in the email itself, your mail client goes out to the net and loads the images from the webserver associated with the spam originator. The URL's in the spam encode info such as your email address so they know that the email got through and that a person actually loaded - this allows them to put a big check box by your name in the active database.

Panther Mail to the rescue with two important features. First of all, when we detect that an email message is spam, Mail refuses to load any external URLs to make sure that the originating site never gets any hint that the message was received.
Second of all, you can instruct Mail to always refuse to load HTML images and objects so you can decided exactly when Mail talks to external websites.

It's sad that any of this is necessary, but Mail takes important steps to help preserve your privacy on the net. [Ken Bereskin's "Panther" Weblog]

The New York Post is reporting that Apple and McDonald's are close to announcing a promotional partnership, with McDonald's offering up to one billion free downloads from the iTunes Music Store.
Like a similar deal announced with Pepsi last month, McDonald's will pay Apple the full 99 cents for each song downloaded. This, given that some will not redeem their prizes, puts the value of the deal in the hundreds of millions.
The Pepsi deal, which offers 100 million free iTMS downloads, begins February 1, during the superbowl. The McDonald's promotion, still unofficial, has no current start date. [dotmac.info]

In an interview with C|NET, Steve Jobs says that the .Mac renewal rate was 86-87%, a stunning figure. Jobs points out that many critics claimed that no one would pay the full $99 price for Apple's suite of web services, but it turns out just the opposite is true. The renewal rate, he says, is "unheard of, higher than almost anybody's. We've built ourselves the beginnings of a pretty good Internet services business." [dotmac.info]
It's about time, I hope more states follow. There needs to be an end to the baby Bell monopoly in this country. The bottom line should be the best service for the best price. If you can't provide it - tough shit. The provider with the best service should always win....

Who are these people trying to kid here? Avid has cut the price of their Xpress software because NOBODY is buying it. People - this product SUCKS! Why? I'll give you ONE reason that says it all. DONGLE. This product uses a dongle to enforce anti-piracy techniques. If you were unfortunate enough to lose or worse yet, have your dongle STOLEN, you would have to practically BUY the software all over again in order to use it!!! I even called Avid about this and that is the exact response I got back. So let me ask you...say you are on a remote shoot and somehow your dongle got misplaced...your $8,000 portable editing workstation just got rendered USELESS. Explain THAT to your boss, or worse yet - your CLIENT! No thank you Avid. I am sticking to Final Cut Pro. Not only is it a BETTER product, they treat the honest customers as they should, like ADULTS. Those who are going to pirate the software are doing it and don't need a dongle!!! So Avid...who are you really hurting? YOURSELVES YOU MORONS!!! Get real....

In a routine new-store article, free Wi-Fi gets play: It's a news event in this New Hampshire town when a 5,400-square-foot Panera opens, partly because it represents a success for a local franchisee expanding operations. But note that the free Wi-Fi gets a couple of grafs. The cost of a couple of grafs that bring more people in to a Panera initially and as permanent lifetime customers is probably tens of thousands of dollars. The cost of free Wi-Fi? Hundreds.... "Apple Computer doesn't create new family members so much as brothers- and sisters-in-arms. Presenting itself as the anti-IBM, Apple is the computer for those who shun the domineering image of 'Big Blue.' This approach can be traced from the historic '1984' television ad that depicted Macintosh computers as a tool to fight Orwellian oppression caused by widespread PC use (aired just once, during the 1984 Superbowl, but still considered one of the most successful ads ever) to its... It's about freaking time, but technology companies are starting to wake up to the importance of good design, and how it's just about the only way to stand out of the crowd in today's ultracompetitive electronics market. What some desperate companies will do to keep their customers. This is pathetic. Does MusicMatch think that anyone in their right mind with an iPod would use their CRAP over the officially sanctioned and specifically designed software for the iPod?

"Mac users, prepare to pounce. Panther, the code name for Apple's latest operating system iteration, OS X 10.3, delivers enough useful and eye-catching improvements—like Exposé, fast user switching, and iChat AV—to warrant an upgrade," Troy Dreier reports for PC Magazine.

Here is another problem I did not notice at first. But when I checked, sure enough the Adobe PDF printer was gone from the list of printers. Following these steps worked, I am now able to print to the virtual printer again in Panther. Another great tip from MacFixIt. Yesterday we covered an issue where installing Panther disabled the Adobe PDF Printer virtual printer; we directed readers to an Adobe Forums thread where Adobe had made available a shell script for recreating/reinstalling Adobe PDF Printer. Reader Len Goff passed along a set of manual instructions for recreating this virtual PDF printer: 1. Launch Printer Setup Utility from the Applications/Utilities folder 2. Hold down the Option key and click the Add button in the Printer List Window 3. Select Advanced from the Printer conncetion drop down menu 4. In the Device Field, select Adobe PDF (pdf) 5. This would be VERY VERY BAD if Google merged with MSFT!!!!
The New York Times confirms the bad news: Google is planning an IPO. And even worse, they've been discussing a merger with Microsoft. "The company [...] has also explored the idea of a so-called Dutch auction, bypassing Wall Street and selling shares directly to investors. Such an approach could give it distance from scandal-plagued investment banking deals of the dot-com era as well as create a huge base of small shareholders." [Google Weblog]
