The Clueless Educators Among Us
One thing that really irritates me is to see how some of our local community "leaders" can't seem to take responsibility for their own actions (or lack thereof). Case in point: Kutztown, PA. To make a long story short, due to a lack of common sense and simple security precautions, what is intended to be a cutting edge 1:1 laptop program in this school, gets turned into a witch hunt because the administration and technology leaders were outsmarted by a bunch of kids.
The solution here is to properly discipline and educate the kids on what it means to have this privilege. If the rules are broken, the maximum penalty should be the loss of the priviledge. This program was never intended to have the students come out of this with a criminal record. What kind of an idiot administrator resorts to this type of punishment? If you ask me, the real issue and case here is the lack of competence of the staff at this school. This is certainly not a case where the punishment fits the crime. It is an outrage that as a parent, I would not take sitting down. To be perfectly honest, I can't understand why a class-action lawsuit has not been filed against the administration and the parents of the 13 accused teens have not gone after them personally as well.
I would encourage the parents of those 13 accused kids to contact the EFF and inquire as to their rights and if they qualify for their representation.
